I am currently living in Desert Hot Springs and am a volunteer Docent at the Palm Springs Air Museum (11 years now). I like it a lot. I bring the picture history of the Rare Bear (Able Cat) with me to the Air Museum when I "work". Saw Lyle's gravesite on a trip to Texas a couple of years back. Hope all is well with you and Carol. Looking forward to the time you fly your MB-5 to the Palm Springs Air Museum. Take care, it was nice "talking" to you. Keep up the great work. Pete

Talked a bit inside the hangar and asked the question if it was used in squadron service back then in the '40's. Always wondered when it would be ready to fly.

Comments:From 'Air Pictorial' vol 25 (11) Nov 1963 p 357 'Your Questions Answered...' Column. Martin-Baker M.B.5. Q.: What will be the ultimate fate of the prototype Martin-Baker M.B.5. at present at Bircham Newton? - (D.C. Clayton, London, N.7.) A.: Unless there is a 'Save the M.B.5 Fund' created soon, the sole example (R2496 built to Air Ministry Specification F.18/39) will be broken-up and sold as srap metal. The manufacturers, Martin Baker Aircraft Ltd., have no wish to house the prototype, nor has the Science Museum or the National Aeronautical Collection shown any interest in preserving the M.B.5. If one puts sentiment aside, the M.B.5 was just another prototype that never got beyond the experimental stage. Nevertheless, those who witnessed the epic aerobatic display executed by Jan Zurakowski at Farnborough, 27-30th June 1946, will affirm the extraordinary manoeuverability of the M.B.5. Powered by a 2,340-h.p. Rolls Royce Griffon 83 (driving a Rotol six-blade contraprop) the M.B.5

I was going to volunteer to help him, as I lived at Stateline, NV at the time. I have since moved to Oak Harbor, Washington, and am presently volunteering on the restoration of a PBY-5A here at the Sea Plane Base on Whidbey Island. My congratulations to John and all the volunteers for a remarkable job with the MB-5. Please visit our website at "www.pbymf.org" and see what we are up to. Comments:What a wonderful thing you guys are doing.I first learnt of the MB5 from a superb article in Wingspan magazine and like most was surprised by my level of ignorance about the existence of this aircraft, and also that such an astonishing piece of engineering history had been created only a few miles from my childhood home. The magazine compared the performance of the MB5 as midway between a Spitfire and a V2 rocket! Congratulations John on your vision and dedication.... the world needs more heroes !
