I bring the picture history of the Rare Bear (Able Cat) with me to the Air Museum when I "work". Saw Lyle's gravesite on a trip to Texas a couple of years back. Hope all is well with you and Carol. Looking forward to the time you fly your MB-5 to the Palm Springs Air Museum. Take care, it was nice "talking" to you. Keep up the great work. Pete

Q.: What will be the ultimate fate of the prototype Martin-Baker M.B.5. at present at Bircham Newton? - (D.C. Clayton, London, N.7.) A.: Unless there is a 'Save the M.B.5 Fund' created soon, the sole example (R2496 built to Air Ministry Specification F.18/39) will be broken-up and sold as srap metal. The manufacturers, Martin Baker Aircraft Ltd., have no wish to house the prototype, nor has the Science Museum or the National Aeronautical Collection shown any interest in preserving the M.B.5. If one puts sentiment aside, the M.B.5 was just another prototype that never got beyond the experimental stage. Nevertheless, those who witnessed the epic aerobatic display executed by Jan Zurakowski at Farnborough, 27-30th June 1946, will affirm the extraordinary manoeuverability of the M.B.5. Powered by a 2,340-h.p. Rolls Royce Griffon 83 (driving a Rotol six-blade contraprop) the M.B.5

The magazine compared the performance of the MB5 as midway between a Spitfire and a V2 rocket! Congratulations John on your vision and dedication.... the world needs more heroes !
